This was in a handwriting practice workbook that my 4-year old is doing. It’s bad enough that the illustrations are atrocious, but hummer instead of hammer? WTF?

That was never going to be an ‘a’. The large dot is the start point and you follow the the smaller dots round.
A lower case ‘ a’ starts either just down from the top right or from the bottom right. Never from the top left.
I’ve put red dots exactly where the original black dots were.
